Our History

Just as Jesus went throughout Galilee preaching the good news of the kingdom of God, Pastor Paul Nelson followed in his footprints in Peoria, Arizona almost 2,000 years later.

Pastor Paul, along with his lovely wife Nan and young daughters Samantha and Courtney, arrived in Peoria, Arizona on August 1, 1987 to begin the mission endeavor of Celebration Lutheran Church.

In the first few weeks, Pastor Paul shared the message of God as he visited with neighbors in the community by going door-to-door inviting them to participate with him in the creation of Celebration.

Not every door accepted his invitation, but with patience and determination, the family known as Celebration Lutheran Church was conceived. These were long days for Pastor Paul, but with his joy, his strong belief, and God's direction, he was successful.

The very first worship service was held on December 6, 1987 in the cafeteria of Cotton Boll Elementary School with 35 people in attendance.

By February 1989, the Worship Service was moved to the chapel at Good Shepherd Care Center. During the time at Good Shepherd, a strong bond was formed between Celebration members and the seniors that called Good Shepherd their home. The youths of the congregation helped in decorating the halls of the care center with colorful door hangers and participating in social events.

Celebration Lutheran Church was organized on January 21, 1990. On February 25, Paul H. Nelson was installed to serve as Pastor of Celebration Lutheran Church. The 1st Church Council was formed. By the end of 1990, membership grew to 155 baptized members.

In October 1992, the congregation grew large enough to move out of the chapel and worship once again in a cafeteria at Sun Valley Elementary School. The cafeteria was transformed into a church every Sunday morning by emptying out the contents of a small storage closet. After Sunday Services, the church was then neatly stored back into this same closet. We were a church in one closet. By the end of 1992, we were self-supporting and had 183 baptized members.

The process of construction of our worship building located at 8726 W. Olive Avenue in Peoria, Arizona began. After the establishing of a contract with our architect, Luis A. Salazar on December 6, 1993, initial design of our current facilities was started. After three bid openings, and a number of years where construction costs skyrocketed, Redden Construction completed construction of our facilities. A ground-breaking service was held on Sunday, November 3, 1996. Our dedication worship service, surrounded by rainbows, was held on May 18, 1997 with 113 in attendance.

A major player in the success of our building program was the Sun City Thrift Store and its staff. Without their financial commitment and dedication to assistance in
